is that it seems unlikely that the majority of those with the strongest opinion about this could answer even some of the most basic true/false questions up to this point. For example, how many really know that there already are sections of wall on the border and in a some spots -- the feedback doesn't seem so good but others actually pretty good (in terms of some kind of measurement of effectiveness compared to pre-wall in those areas). Rather than acknowledge that it might make sense for additional sections of wall (or not, but it does seem worth discussion) -- the debate has become nothing more than absurd screeching on all sides based almost entirely on garbage politics rather than any sense of rational approach.

And now the kicker, you are right -- the only conceivable "plan" for how Mexico will be asked to pay for this will be in the form of some kind of tariff, tax, etc... Under this method, Mexico will be paying for nothing (other than pain inflicted on its citizens - that should only help, right?) BUT the U.S. will be paying at least twice -- first in the form on what we actually spend in taxpayer money and then what the taxpayers will pay again (especially those who can least afford it) in the form of higher prices for the goods/services caught up in the trade dispute -- not to mention what it is likely to cost us in additional ways with retaliatory measures taken against some of our exports.
